Of course I'm getting mixed messages in my work regarding where to go. First I've been told to expand media and ideas now I'm told it's too broad so narrow it down. I lucked out with more information regarding William Blake and slavery that can inform my work. I also want to consider working in a much larger scale. I'm done experimenting with media I'm unfamiliar with (so goodbye abstract work ! ). Yet I can't help but feel frustrated when being reminded that it's good for me to be pushed, challenged etc. Yet being reminded that it's too broad.
I was asked by a classmate what do I want my audience to gain from viewing my work. Since the original intention in my work was to inform and educate I'm still there. But I want people to realize and acknowledge things that they might not be aware of or prioritize.
I am so lucky and fortunate to have met two living artists whose work and political insights got me into art. Dana Chandler and recently Sue Coe.
The artist Sue Coe had once said in a lecture that her work exposes hypocrisy but she doesn't expect it to change things in an of itself. Meeting her for a crit was a good learning experience. Her passion for things political and moral was quite inspiring. She wants me to continue on the scrolls and stay focused. She also wants me to go to Mexico City and gain inspiration from the art and murals like Charles White and other African American artists have done. Listening to her talk, and looking at her work again reminded me of my purpose in doing what I do.
